Setting up your Messenger Bot in 20 Minutes

Setup a new Facebook Messenger Chatbot in 20 Minutes

Setting up a brand new Facebook Messenger Chatbot is a simple and valuable step to helping future proof your business. Doing it sooner rather than later is key as ALL businesses start from ZERO subscribers when they first start a chatbot. You can’t message existing page likes or import lists to message. Facebook controls the environment and make it impossible to cold message someone (like you would when you buy an email list or followers) without their permission first.

Facebook Messenger Chatbots help businesses with two key areas:

  1. Reduce costs and time associated with customer engagement, communication and management.
  2. Increase opportunities to engage, qualify and capitalise from customers that actively seek a conversation with you.

Here is how to set up a Facebook Messenger Chatbot in under 20 minutes.

To be able to send messages to users, you need to connect a third-party application and give it permission to do so. There are literally hundreds of different programs you can use, they can all be compared and researched at BotList. One thing to make note of, is that Facebook are constantly changing it’s settings and rules around third-party programs, so you want to make sure that the program you choose has the resources and backing possible to stay up to date with changes.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective recommendation that has been backed by resources than we use Manychat. They have a freemium model with most features available including their branding completely free of charge. Prices then start from $10 per month for up to 500 subscribers and it scales from there. Comparatively to other Email and Customer Management systems, it’s a very cost-effective solution.

Once you’re happy, sign up by using your Facebook account (it needs this to verify you have an account) and head to the next steps.

Visit your business integrations section on Facebook to first setup your page to allow connections from 3rd party tools.

Go to your Facebook Business Settings section at:

Your Facebook Business Integration settings

Once you’ve signed up to your bot program it will appear here.

Click on the ‘view and edit’ button to change the permissions for your Chatbot program you have signed up to.

Visit to connect your Facebook page, if you have followed the steps above correctly it will appear in the list of pages for you to connect.

Choosing your Facebook Page in Manychat

Under the Automation menu you will be able to edit the following:

  • Main Menu (available all the time and for people to swipe up to access)
  • Welcome Message (Replies BEFORE someone has messages your page for the first time)
  • Default Reply (set it to go only once every 24 hours so it doesn’t reply every time)

This is a great place to start when it comes to helping reduce the resources it takes for community management.

Think of the top 4-5 questions that you commonly get asked and how you would usually respond to them. Under the Automation menu, select the ‘Keyword’ option.

Here you can set up combinations of common phrases that people use in their messages and they reply that is sent to them. This section is constantly evolving as you discover new messages, replies that work and some that don’t so keep an eye on how you reply to people and the effectiveness of your replies.
